The three pillars: character, context, and syllable are the base of chinese language. I managed to finish the syllables in cantonese. Then I finished importing the CEDICT. Now I modified the original context structure to the one matching the CEDICT and I extracted the CEDICT for all single chinese characters which amounts to just over 10,000 distinguished characters. There are still some characters left out from the cantonese syllables.

There are couples of servces available:

look for character(word) from cantonese syllables/sound

Of course, other than those, there are ADD, MODIFY but required permitted user in order to do so and hopefully turn off those spammers.

CEDICT stands for Chinese English Dictionary. The original website is at:

There are a lot mirrors and website implementing the dictionary using the CEDICT data.
I always mispelled the CEDICT as CEDIT, some how think about the EDITOR..

The data has been databased and combined the earlier set. Hopefully in the future, I will add some more current ones to better the set. Enjoy the convenience and the sharing of the data!

Cantonese Service

The Cantonese Service is taking shape. The services include getting the syllable table and through the table you can get the list of character with the same syllable. You can specify the syllables in terms of consonant and vowel to list all characters of that particular sound and even specify the tone to get the list of characters with the same consonant, vowel and tone.
To the get a particular character, you can specify the character with the number corresponding to the order of the listing.
You can also enter a character to obtain the syllable of the particular character.
Most important of all is that you can enter a whole text into the text area and the system will find all the syllables for the entered characters, with sound as well.
You can have the format out to display the syllables, to voice the text one character at a time automatically or to voice each character based on the clicking of the characters.
It is hopefully a great learning tools for those who want to learn chinese in cantonese.

Based on the analysis of Mr Wong Sek Ling on Cantonese Dialect, there are 53 vowels times 20 consonants including the non-aspirated consonant (using -, ie no consonant), that is, 1060. This is the maximum set or collection of all possible syllables and not all syllables are used in common dialect.
My system indicated that there are 666 syllables in various 666 files and here is the report:

If each syllable has 6 tones, there will be 3996 ways of saying in Cantonese. If you consider that this is the maximum, as some syllable ending with p, k, and t are called "entering" vowels, there are only 3 for each, instead of 6. This number will be less.

The advantage of Cantonese, one character one syllable tone, even though there are multiple characters per unit of syllable tone, the expression with language is amazingly endless.

This is some anaylsis that can be done in Communication System using a fixed set of symbols. The communication passed from thousand years from the past to the present century.

Character Look up

A lot of chinese character input or chinese character selection method is based on pin-yin. The problem of those methods are that users have to get used to the spelling of the syllables. There so many way to spell out the sound, but there is no standard. Another problem is that they do not have a good collection of characters. Another method is to look at the character and spell out the strokes which made up the character. It is quite arbitrary but with a lot of training, some people manage to type very fast with accurary, called themselves the expert. Another kind is type the English meaning of the character like dictionary or translation, you can hope that the desired character can be found.
PRECISION is hard to achieve or accuracy or probability of getting the right character is not good for most people even though they are cantonese native speaker.
I kept the traditional way of looking up character using radicals as they are the most basic, even though it is not efficiency. This way can guarantee you to find the character you find. A faster way is to look up the character from its probable syllables as some of them sound very similar. It will be beneficial to someone who do not speak with proper syllable and they can learn how now.

同音選字法

同音選字法係基於反切原理，反切不同拼音，拼音用英文或外文拼出來，原理也是一樣。
PINYIN 拼音 is like spelling the sound based on the set of alphabets. Chinese does not do it this way. They use something called 反切.
I called my system 同音選字法 because you will look for the word in Chinese to find the proper chinese with the disired sound, then look up the tones and pick the desired character.

You can see how special is Chinese, it has both Simplified and Traditional. It is the simplifed version that separate Chinese people. A "modern & Simplfied" chinese like to be different from the "Traditional" chinese and this is the main reason that Chinese cannot be UNITED. Cantonese Input Methods =廣東話輸入法

Cantonese is traditional chinese. It has been traced back thousands years ago. It is one of the most ancient language. It should be the one to represent chinese. To learn chinese, it is far better to learn cantonese.

A lot of people say chinese is hard to learn as well as cantonese is hard to learn. Not really. There are only 20 consonants including the 0 consonant, ie, no consonant sound, just vowels.

There are only 7 basic vowels and with the compound vowels and aspiration ending, the p, k, and t, there are only 53 vowels to be distinguished. We are not talking about 53 times 20 which amount to over 1000 typical syllables and not talking about over 10,000 chinese characters. Knowing how to combine them is to say there are 53+20 which is 73 ways of creating the cantonese syllables.

By grouping the chinese characters which is over 10,000 into each syllables, or way to sound the character, it is easier to remember than to remember the ASCII table which has 255 characters.

A lot of chinese input systems are using "pin yin" or "ping yin", actually should say "ping jam" in cantonese.
The formal or normal way of entering the syllables using consonant and vowel and then choose the desired character is what each of everybody is doing. I do not like the idea and so I create one which is based on the embedded syllables of the character with reference to the "pin yin" or "ping jam" (consonant+vowel input). Looking up all characters with the same syllables is a lot more fun and for the learning of the chinese characters.

Everything starts from something. To learn mathematics or language, you just need to learn the fundamental axiom and here to learn the basic character with his typical syllable without spelling the syllable with pin yin.

Cantonese's Consonants

There are 20 consonants in Cantonese, they can be related in term of how the sound is produced:

b, p, m, f like those in English speaking, distinguished by using the lip.
The particular one is ng. It is hard for English speaking people as it is using the nose. Some phonetic representation using 'ŋ' instead of 'ng' but using ng is easier to input from the keyboard.
d, t, n, l and particularly n and l is very hard to distinguish if not listen with the most attention. Same as d and t. They use mainly the tongue to produce sound. For English speaking people, it is easy as m and n are very common consonants.
w, gw and kw are very close. But gw and kw are relatively more difficult to differentiate but listen to how the vocal cord produce that sound. gw is a lot heavier, more solid. kw has more flow of air.
ts or c, dz or z and s has more air to flow out through the teeth and z is more solid while s is more light.
k and g is like a pair as if kw and gw. They are close. g is heavier or more solid and k is more flow of air. The difference between k and kw or g and gw is the w, the formation of sound with w means more around the mouth.
j and h are the silent pair. They product light sound starting like 'j'ay and 'h'ide. A gently flow of air through the mouth and or nose.
b,p,m,f,t,d,n,l,j and h count to 10. k,g,kw,gw,w,ts or c,dz or c, s and ng count to 9. Adding the null or no consonant will be a total of 20. A perfect even number of 20 consonants of cantonese.

Cantonese has the sound HEA. Proper vowel and consonant should be 'he'. It is not the same as the English's pronunciation of the pronoun 'he'. The vowel 'e' sounds like 'er' and so most HK people spell it as 'ea' which is like 'E'+'A' and 'A' actually sounds like 'R'. It is hard to follow some STANDARD.

The group of 'e' vowel's characters include 啤(be), 咩(me), 啡(fe), 爹(de), 呢(ne), 嘅(ge), 遮(ze), 車(ce), 些(se) and 爺(je). 'he' has no character but it looks like the sound comes from 係嘅切 which is the chinese way to spell the sound. It uses the consonant of 係 which is 'h' and vowel of 嘅 which is 'e'. Since 切 means cut, so the 'he' or 'hea' (unofficial) means cut the 係嘅, both means right. Therefore the meaning of 'he' or 'hea' is not having or doing the right thing. According to some current interpretation, wasting time doing some useless activities, no particular goal for anything.

Cantonese evolves long time ago, over thousands year and each sound is embedded in the character and the sound implies certain meaning, feeling and expression.

故 can mean past, but here mean the reason, used as adverb, deliberately, meant to.
弄 means play, make it.
玄 means too complex to understand.

訒 means hesitate in speech. This is the word my daughter picked. We plan to pick one character word a day and have her learn how to speak, write and get the meaning.
This character is composed of 言=speak and 刃=stab. If speech is stabbed, then will be difficult to speak.
In cantonese, 訒 is sounded 'jan6', the 6^th tone.

贇 in cantonese is same as 温 ('wan' first tone). The character means pleasant, fine. It is used mostly for name. To break up the character, you will have 文 ('man'), 武 ('mou') and 貝 ('bui'), that is, you have almost everthing that one wants, 文 represents knowledge and wisdom, 武 represents strength and fitness like kungfu, martial arts and 貝 mean wealth, money.
A famous badminton champion is called 蔡贇.

It is OK to laugh someone making a mistake, it is to remind those who made a mistake to make a correction. Sometimes, someone may not take the laugh in a positive way. They treat the action being humiliated. That is OK too.
